What Does Global Citizenship Mean to Me?

Global citizenship is something that anybody who is connected to the world and has the ability to affect something not only in their country but others possess. If you have a global citizenship I believe that it means you have a responsibility, not a freedom, to not ignore and shelter yourself from issues that do or don’t affect you. You also should have the responsibility to do something if it helps an issue while still being able to provide for yourself. Because Brexit is affecting Europe and isn’t directly affecting the country you live in doesn’t mean you can ignore the issues. As a global citizen you have the responsibility to acknowledge issues and their effect on everybody's life because you are not a single citizen. Being a global citizen means making choices based on the effect it has on other people and not necessarily on yourself and it means doing what you can within your limitations. If you have the ability to fix an issue but fixing it will cause you to not be able to survive you aren’t expected to do anything. What global citizenship entitles is similar between the contrast of rights and responsibilities in today’s law system. As a global citizen you have the right to hear about issues around the world and connect yourself to the world but you also have a responsibility to not ignore issues and to do what you can, within reason, to support those affected by these issues or to help solve the issue. If you are a high-school student you aren’t expected to make a change but nothing is stopping you. If you are the richest man alive you are expected to make a change because you can do many things with the money you have and because you are connected to the world you have a responsibility to do so but they don’t gain profit from it so they don’t do it. As a global citizen you have to think not only about one issue but the issues that could stem from solving it. This is evident in the carbon tax. The Carbon tax was put into place to help stop the issue of global warming but it created multiple issues including loss of jobs and a degrading economy. This also brings me to the fact that nothing can be perfect and being a global citizen does not entail striving for a perfect world but a better one. But even if being a global citizen means not ignoring the issues there are still “issues” that people focus on that aren’t really that serious. If you are a global citizen you should learn to see what are truly issues and to not ignore events that could even become issues. Being a global citizen is not about going green or veganism but about making the world collectively better for all peoples not just those in the first world.
